We Will teach you some simple tricks to keep your flowers fresh and full of life for much longer. Following these steps will extend the useful life of your flowers, offering you all their joy and color for longer.
Change the water regularly
One of the things that causes cut flowers to wilt so quickly is bacteria in the water. The most basic thing you can do to preserve cut flowers is to change the water once a day. Use lukewarm water.
Pure water: You can also treat the water to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Two tablespoons of sugar, apple cider vinegar, or even a dime or similar in the bottom of the vase can keep your flowers fresh longer. A small amount of chlorine in the vase water also serves to control the growth of bacteria and keep the water clean.
Stem care
Different types of flowers have different types of stems, and different types of stems require different treatments in order to keep your flowers fresh. The most basic way to treat stems is to trim the ends a small amount each day when you change the water and cut them off at a 45-degree angle. However, you may also want to do the following: Separate the last 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the stem for wooden stems, such as lilac stems. This helps them absorb more water. Burn flower stalks with milky stems like Christmas flowers. This milk damages other flowers in the bouquet. Daffodils also produce this milk, but burning them won’t work for them, so avoid using them in mixed bouquets. Fill in flower stems with hollow stems, like dahlias. Fill the stem with water, cover the hole with your finger and submerge it. This will help them stay upright and cool.
Be careful with the temperature
If the place you put the flowers is too hot or too cold you’ve placed your cut flowers, they will wilt much faster. Move them to a location with a good neutral temperature. However, some flowers do better in warmer temperatures. If you have tropical flowers, like birds of paradise, consider a warmer spot.
Remove excess leaves
Remove any leaves, flowers, or branches that are below the water level. Having them under water stimulates the growth of bacteria. Feed your flowers. Remember that you can buy flower food, thus providing your flowers with the nutrients that are lost after cutting them. This will significantly increase the life expectancy of cut flowers.
